I admit it; I’ve always been a jealous person.
As one of those high-achieving, always shoot for the stars sort of people, I have a tendency to compare myself to others especially when it comes to my career.
Although things are pretty darn good right now, jealousy does rear its ugly little head from time to time.
Recently, there was an important event happening in London, and I knew many of the über successful people in my industry were going to be speaking at it, and that it would be life-changing for me. But for some reason, I found myself hesitating to register for the conference.
After a few hours of avoiding my computer, I realized what was going on: I was jealous. I admitted to my husband that I was afraid I would be too envious when I got to the event because I wanted to be one of the ones speaking – not just another member of the audience.
As those words came out of my mouth, I started laughing. Over the years I’ve learned that jealousy can make us sound (and act) a bit ridiculous at times, and this was definitely one of those moments.
Clearly I still get jealous, but now, I have a different way of looking at it.
So what is jealousy?
I believe jealousy is something that’s actually quite a good indicator of where you want to be in your life. It points out where you may be holding back or what your true emotion is regarding a life step or goal.
It’s important to recognize it as an indicator, then let it go and do something to get yourself in the game (whatever that means to you).
Whether it’s a relationship, job, move, or even weight goal you’re after, all of those things are attainable. There’s no reason to waste precious time or energy being jealous when you can use that energy to actually do what you want to do!
So next time you find yourself feeling a twinge of jealousy, merely thank your feelings for giving you clarity, let them go and then aim for what you want!
