Have you ever had one of days where you wake up full of ideas and a task list for your business that’s a mile long, but you’re overcome by that “I don’t feel like it” feeling?
We’ve all been there at one point or another. We all have those days where we’re just feeling blah, but I’ve found that too many entrepreneurs let those “I don’t feel like it” days turn into weeks, months or even years. They’re waiting for a bout of inspiration, for a mood to strike, or for everything to feel “together” before they take action. It’s basically another form of overwhelm.
James and I just attended the first session of our year-long Mastermind with Brendon Burchard, coaching legend and high-performance master, and this is something he spoke about that really caught my attention because I think it’s a challenge that so many entrepreneurs face – especially when there’s a lot on your plate or when you have a big idea that requires lots of effort.
(In case you’re wondering more about Brendon, he’s a #1 New York Times, #1 Wall Street Journal, #1 Amazon and #1 USA Today best-selling author. He’s the star and executive producer of the #1 self-help series on YouTube. His podcast, The Charged Life, debuted at #1 on iTunes across all categories in multiple countries, and has remained in the Top 10 in its category for over 100 weeks. His live webcasts continue to set records and have generated tens of millions of dollars in sales. Success Magazine named Brendon “one of the Top 25 Most Influential Leaders in Personal Growth and Achievement. Oh, and he works with Oprah.)
But as Brendon shared, the truth is, the mood isn’t always going to strike. You won’t be overcome everyday with magical waves of inspiration. You won’t necessarily feel “in the mood” to write your program content, to work on your website, or to invest in your business.
In fact, there will be days when every fiber of your being will tell you to stay curled up in your bed and to put off that next step for your biz until tomorrow…
But here’s the key, lovely: if you’re really ready to make your business and your dreams happen, you can’t keep waiting on the mood to strike, or to “feel like it” today.
In fact, one thing I’ve learned when it comes to dealing with moments like this, is that it’s essential to keep in mind your “why”. Why is it so important that you create or grow this business? To create a better life for yourself and your family? To be able to live the kind of life you’ve been longing for? To be able to make an impact in the world?
Remembering your “why” is crucial to helping you move forward in the face of those less-than-inspiring moments. When you keep your “why” at the forefront, no matter your mood or your feelings when you wake up each day, you’ll be reminded of what motivates you to take that next step in the direction of your dreams.
Let your “why” serve as a reminder that you already have the ability within you to take at least one action today that will bring you a step closer to the life and business you desire.
I encourage you to write down your “why” and keep it in a place where you’ll see it often – your nightstand, your bathroom mirror, or your laptop. Use it as a way to begin each day with a reminder of why taking action matters. Let it serve as inspiration for setting an intention for your day.
Decide to move forward in spite of your mood or your feelings. Even when the mood isn’t striking, use your reasons for doing what you’re doing in your biz as your motivation to create something, to sell something, and to simply take action.
Trust me, I know what it’s like to have those days where things feel less than inspiring — and I know everyone I met at the conference does too (even rockstars in our industry!). But I’ve learned that when I take action in spite of “not feeling like it” that’s when I really start to build momentum, to create resilience within myself, and to form the habit of being persistent. And all of that has been so key to getting to where I am in my life and business today and is what will set you and me apart from the crowd, lovely.
You have what it takes to do that too, lovely. You have the ability to make your dreams your reality. So make the commitment to yourself right now to take action and move forward toward your dreams each and every day, because you’re worth the effort.
You’ve got this!
