Yesterday, as we drove into London from the peaceful British countryside, I found myself unexpectedly tearing up. I was overwhelmed with gratitude—grateful to be back in this city I love, and in awe that I’m now here with my daughter. It’s a full-circle moment that I never could have predicted back in 2010 when I made the decision to move here from Ohio.
To understand the gravity of this moment, let me take you back. A year before I moved to London, I had been planning to go to grad school in Chicago. But, on the day I was supposed to drive to school, I did a complete 180. I turned the car around and drove straight back to my parents’ house. I didn’t know why, I just felt like it wasn’t right. Fast forward a year, and I was moving across the world to London on a whim, a feeling, a gut instinct. Little did I know, that decision would change the course of my life.
I met my husband online in 2011, we lived in London together for nearly a decade, and then in 2019, we moved back to the US. That initial move, based purely on a feeling in my heart, is now part of the story that led me to where I am today—living the life I always dreamed of. And as I drove back into the city with my daughter, I couldn’t help but reflect on how much this city—and this journey—has shaped me.
It all started with a feeling. And as I sit here today, I can’t help but think about how we all tend to overlook our hearts and our intuition in pursuit of success.
The Heart: Your Most Powerful Success Strategy
For most of my life, I didn’t understand the power of following my heart. Growing up, I was always taught about personal development, but never once was I told it was okay to follow my heart. I wasn’t taught that my heart has the answers to the big questions in life. Instead, I often felt ashamed of being emotional—crying in public places, feeling things deeply. I even remember an ex-boyfriend telling me that I’d never be able to help anyone because I wasn’t “emotionally stable” enough.
For a long time, I equated being “heart-centered” with being overly emotional or unstable. Intuition, to me, was just something you might need in a dangerous situation. But it wasn’t something to guide you toward your dreams or mission in life.
And here’s the thing—I know I’m not alone in this. We’re all taught to listen to external voices—society, parents, teachers, or even friends—more than we listen to our inner selves. We’re conditioned to think our way to success and follow logical steps, rather than tuning into what our hearts are telling us.
But here’s the truth: the heart has wisdom that the mind often cannot access. And yet, so many of us are completely disconnected from that wisdom.
Why We Deny Our Desires
Have you ever wondered why so many opportunities seem to pass you by? Or why you sometimes feel like you’re not quite in alignment with what you truly want? It’s because you’re not listening to your heart.
Most of us are conditioned to make decisions based on logic, education, or what we think we “should” do. We’re taught to focus on being “rational” and “sensible” rather than letting our emotions or desires guide us. We’re told to be more “masculine”—to focus on action and practicality—rather than embracing our intuition and emotional intelligence. The result? We live lives that are completely out of sync with what we really want.
If you find yourself comparing your life to others on social media or feeling jealous of what others have, it’s likely because you’ve been ignoring your own desires for so long that you’ve lost sight of what’s possible for you.
The Path to Clarity: Two Simple Steps
It’s time to stop ignoring the calling of your heart. In order to get what you want, you first have to know what you want. As T. Harv Eker says, “In order to get what you want, you have to know what you want.” Simple, right? But so many of us are sleepwalking through life, missing the cues, and denying ourselves the possibility of a life we actually desire.
So how do you start listening to your heart and getting clear on your desires? Here are two simple steps to help you tune in:
1. Create Your Own List of Desires
Start by writing down everything you want in life. Don’t hold back or censor yourself—just get everything out of your head and onto paper. You can organize them into categories like “Life” and “Career,” or just make one big list. What do you want in the next year? In five years? In ten years? Write it all down.
2. Practice Following Your Desires
Once you’ve got your list, start practicing following your desires. Begin with the small things. What do you feel like eating this weekend? What new course do you want to take? What podcast do you want to listen to? If you’re not sure what you want, start by paying attention to how you feel. As Danielle LaPorte says in her book The Desire Map, “Behind every desire, there is a feeling, and your feelings will lead you to your soul.” Pay attention to what you feel and let that guide you toward the deeper desires of your heart.
It’s time to stop making yourself wrong for wanting what you want. Stop judging your desires or questioning why they exist. Instead, embrace them and encourage yourself the same way you would encourage your best friend. You have the power to create the life you want, and it all starts with listening to your heart.
Trust Your Heart, Trust Yourself
Take my story of moving to London as an example. When I first felt the pull to move across the world, I didn’t have all the answers. But I acknowledged the feeling, validated it, and allowed myself to explore how I could make it happen. The “how” is what often trips people up, but when you follow your heart, you’ll find a way to make it work.
You don’t have to have everything figured out. Trust me, anything is possible if you allow yourself to explore what you’re being called to do, have, and be.
And if you’re ready to dive deeper into this process, I’ve created a free Dream Life Guide to help you unlock the power of desire and start creating the life you truly want. You can download it today and begin your journey toward a heart-led life.
By following your heart, you open the door to a life full of possibility, purpose, and joy. Don’t wait any longer—start listening to your heart today, and watch the magic unfold!
