What to Do When You Feel Stuck

One thing I know for sure is that at some point everyone in this life feels stuck. Is that you? I felt that way for years and used to cry on a daily basis because I didn’t know what I was doing with my life. Trust me, you’re not alone.

I recently saw Oprah Winfrey’s interview with actor Hugh Jackman and was blown away, not by what Hugh had to say, but by the questions he asked her when he decided to turn the tables. Hugh got Oprah to open up about her 20’s and her career at that time.

At 28-years-old, when Oprah was a newscaster at a small news channel on the East Coast, she felt stuck.  Although she was successful in the role, she had no idea what she was going to do next. In fact, she cried night after night because she felt that she was never going to go any further in her career. She thought she’d already reached “the top” in her industry. She was confused because she had no idea what she wanted to do next and didn’t really expect any other doors to open up for her. She was stuck. Oprah was stuck.

Reading that sentence over, it still surprises me. I knew that Oprah had a very difficult childhood and that she succeeded despite the odds being stacked against her, but I figured that once she got into the field of journalism, it was smooth-sailing from there.

And what about you? Do you believe this is as far as your story is going to go or that you’ve reached your peak in terms of your career? Are you lost or feeling stuck?

More often than not, we as women rely on the past or what’s been done before to dictate our future. For example, Oprah had no idea what was in store for her and really couldn’t ever imagine it since it hadn’t been done. What if life has a plan for you that hasn’t been done yet?

In my own life, I could have never dreamed that I’d be doing what I’m doing today (or living in London for that matter!). Growing up, I didn’t even know that online coaching existed, so I could have never imagined starting a company like this.

I’m all about living in the moment, but I believe that it should be paired with dreaming big about what you can achieve. So many of us keep ourselves in the “newscaster box” and don’t realize what immense potential we really have. The perfect job (that utilizes all of your talents and abilities) might not even exist until you create it.

As Oprah said, she thought she had reached her peak and had no idea of the opportunities that would come and the doors that would open. There has never been anyone like Oprah in this world, so how could she know?

So this week, really reflect on your own life. Are you playing small with your talents? Are you thinking inside the box? Are you limiting yourself? If so, I challenge you to question just whether life could have bigger things in mind for you. Just because it’s never been done before, doesn’t mean it won’t be. Just because you don’t know how, doesn’t mean you never will. Be open to receiving new possibilities and options regarding living your dreams!

P.S. This weekend, I had a client tell me that by going through her initial session with me and writing down what she actually wants in life and her career, opportunities that she never expected have already started coming her way. How amazing is that?!
